Hunger strike of railwaymen in Bialystok

On Monday two of railway unionists in Bialystok began a hunger strike as a protest against the plans of association the Podlasie Province's Plant of Regional Transports with the Mazovia province's one.
"We are afraid of the dissmissals connected with that" - one of the protesters, chairman of raliway "Solidarity" in Bialystok Jerzy Grodzki said.

Grodzki emphasized that the plans of association are a sudden and a suprising decision of the PKP's (Polish National Railways) management. According to him the association of two of the regional transoprts plants can lead to a loss of 50 workplaces in PKP in Podlasie province.

The unionists emphasize that they won't stop the hunger strike until the PKP enterpise's management will resign from their plans. Grodzki informed that on 9th June in Bialystok there was to be a meeting qwith the president of management of PKP Regional Transports but it had been moved to 15th June.

The association is to happen on 1st July. According to director of Podlasie Province's Regional Transports Plant (ZPR) Halina Kurzyna workplaces are guaranteed for all already empolyed but she admitted that part of them will have to drive from Bialystok to Warsaw.

The management of Podlasie Province is against the association. As its Monday's announcement says it is shocked with the decision of the enterprise's authorities which "realizes the politics of accomplished facts with which it prises the credibility of PKP as a partner".
The Podlasie's management reminds that 19th May 2004 the president of PKP Regional Transports Ltd declared to sign up an intentional letter about studying an economical analysis about the regional division of raliway passenger transports.

According to the local government's members the association of Podlasie's ZPR with the Mazovia's one can cause a liquidation of some regional connections and with that limit a possibility of communication in the province and increase the unemployment.

"In that situation the management of Podlasie Province expresses a objection about association of the plants and considers the sense of further cooperation with the haulier" - says the statement f the local government's members sent on Monday to the president of PKP Regional Transports Ltd.
