The trial of ex-workers of McDonald's began

On Wednesday the trial of six workers of the McDonald's restaurant in Swidnica (North Silesia) has begun in the local court.

The former manager of the restaurant was accused of appropriation of 35 thousand zlotys and five of his employees (women) were accused of helping him in the crime. They can be punished from three months to 5 years of imprisonment.

The accused claim that they are innocent and that all the case is a revenge of the McDonald's management because of setting up the first trade union in these restarants' net.

A report to the public prosecutor 's office was reported last year by McDonald's net management after the control that was undertaken in the Swidnica's restaurant showed some financial abuses. Six workers were disciplinarily dissmissed. Now they are struggling in front of the court to be restored to work.

"We were dissmissed under pretence of some irregularities that we were to have made in the restaurant. That is all only a cover. The bosses found out that we set up a trade union and the dissmisslas are the consequence of that. We were only doing our job in accordance with the law" Agnieszka N., the former manager of the restaurant McDnolad's in Swidnica told PAP.
The trade union in Swidnica's restaurant came into being on the 19th of September 2003 and the first dissmissals begun on the 23rd of September. The union came into being already after the accusations of irregularities in running the restaurant.

"Solidarity" trade union has also been angaged in the case. During one of the National Convention of NSZZ "Solidarity" in Stalowa Wola the delegates protested against breaking worker's rights in Swidnica's restaurant. The management of "Solidarity" from Bottom Silesia region demanded an immediate restoration of the dissmissed workers to work.

McDonalds's breaks workers rights!

Half of staff from McDonald's restaurant in Swidnica had been fired from work. Reason for this purge was fact, that few days earlier they foundedtrade union. Workers were fired disciplinary and official reason was "fraud of money". "McDonald's is not against trade unions. We are against breaking a law"- said press officer of McDonalds.

In Poland its more and more frequent tobreak trade union and workers rights. Although in case of big factories workers can rely on help of trade unions, in sector of services and small trade they are usually deprived of all help. This practices are lead by big multinationals like McDonalds or owners of supermarkets like OBI.

Existance of trade union could limit those practices, thats why for founding one you get fired immadietely.

Economical sense of such activities is simple- profits should go only to hands of individuals, rest of society is meanwhile getting poorer, unemployment grows, social help is being liquidated.

Resistance to activities of big business is growing-also in Poland.

About 100 trade union members picketed McDonald in Swidnica in defence of sacked workers. Firecrackers had been thrown . Restaurant was closed during protest.

On 15th of October there were next solidarity actions in few cities of Poland.
