In defence of union privileges

In Poland lately there were a lot of violations of union privileges. What's more - it is taking place in the country, where not so long ago workers have fought for free trade unions and they paid an excessive price for their liberality - the price of long standing jail or even life.

In this context to-day's attempts of people's actively engaged in union work persecutions by employers move disgust. Especially that those employers very often use protection of the police and the civil service. Human right and dignity don't matter any more - the most important is the profit of an investor and an owner. In the name of this kind of logic the lawlessness is taking place - because you are a member of trade union or you want to organise one - you can be dismissed, turned into the street, intimidated, you can become a victim of inexcusable violence.

"The fight is on". Calendar of workers' protest 2002

INTRODUCTION

A new wave of workers' strikes in Poland has appeared after 22 years since Polish August happened and after 13 years of the social and political changes beginning in 1989. In 2001 the social conflicts ran deeper. It is estimated that only in Warsaw about 183 strikes took place - what was the biggest abundance of social dissatisfaction since 1990. In 2002 number of open, especially workers' frictions in Poland has increased. Moreover, the employees have begun to organise the protests up and down the country.

Despite the fact that nowadays manifestations aren't as popular and as crowded as those 10 or 20 years ago, a lot of observers agree that they are the biggest wave of social discontent since the beginning of 1990. It contains major trade of Polish marketplace like shipyard and car industry, mining industry, metallurgy and medical care as well.

Appeal for support of Ożarów protest

The workers of the cable factory in Ożarów have protested without any brake for over seven months. They are blocking the main gate of factory to make carries out of the machine industrial impossible.

The factory had worked without any problems (a lot of orders, good financial position, work on three shifts) as long as Tele-Fonica bought it. The new owner, Bogusław Ciupał, from day to day dismissed all crew and stopped the production.

The official reason why the factory should be closed was that marketplace of the telephonic cables broke down. The owner made nothing of the workers who could produce every kind of cables (not only telephonic), had a new technology, good machines and had fulfilled every order. No negotiation with the workers had been made. That's shows how owner of Tele-Fonica who has monopoly in the polish marketplace treats people working for him.
